Cone top beer cans are part of the long history of packaging gimmicks and marketing ploys of the beer making industry in the United States. Throughout the history of brewing in America, companies have recognized the value of marketing. In the era of the cone top beer can, companies designed their own graphics which they then applied to the recyclable cone tops. The cone tops were then refilled and recapped, just as is done with beer bottles today.
Cone top beer cans had their beginning after flat tops were already popular. In 1935, Continental Can introduced the first cone top beer can. It was one of three companies that came to dominate the cone top beer can market, with the others being Crown Cork & Seal and American Can Company.
In late 1937, Crown Cork & Seal introduced the J-spout. The earliest J spouts had a flat bottom but later versions employed a concave bottom. Find yourself a flat bottom J spout cone top beer can and that’s a nice beer collectible. Low profile cone tops preceded high profile, and in the the early 1940’s, the Continental Can Company gradually stopped production of the low profile cone top beer can.
Other changes included the crowntainer.
